Types of cable that may be suitable
- Copper building wire and flexible cable.
- Armoured and unarmoured power cable.
- Aluminium service and overhead cables.
- Industrial control and instrumentation cable offcuts.
- Stripped or bright bare wire.
Insulated versus stripped cable
Insulated cable is wrapped in plastic or rubber, so only part of its weight is metal. Stripped cable is the exposed conductor. The two are assessed differently, because the metal content and the effort to recover it are different. Larger cables with a high proportion of copper are generally discussed differently from thin, heavily insulated cable.
How to submit cable details
- Photographs of the cable, including cut ends and any labelling on the jacket.
- Whether the conductor looks copper-coloured or silver-coloured.
- Approximate length, number of drums or total weight.
- Where it came from and whether it is mixed with other waste.
- Your location and access arrangements.
Before you pull cable out
Make sure circuits are fully isolated and de-energised by a qualified person before cable is removed. Do not cut or handle live cables. If cable is removed from a building, check with the owner or contractor that it is yours to sell.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you buy aluminium cable?
Aluminium cable can be discussed. Tell us the type and send photographs.
Should I strip the insulation?
Do not burn it. Ask us whether stripping is worthwhile for your type of cable.
How do I know if the conductor is copper?
Copper is reddish-orange, aluminium is silver. A photo of a cut end is useful.
Can I sell armoured cable?
It can be discussed; steel armour affects how it is assessed.
Do you collect large cable drums?
Collection depends on quantity, location and access. Please ask.
